Lake Minnetonka spans over 14,000 acres and is the largest lake in the Minneapolis and St. Paul Metro Area. The area includes fourteen small communities: Minnetonka, Excelsior, Greenwood, Woodland, Deephaven, Wayzata, Mound, Shorewood, Minnetonka Beach, Spring Park, Orono, Long Lake, Minnetrista, and Victoria. It’s eastern shores are located within 12 miles of downtown Minneapolis, Lake Minnetonka offers the best of lake living with the conveniences of a big city nearby.
 
The history of Lake Minnetonka can be traced back to the 1800s when Europeans discovered this expansive body of water. The first settlement was established in 1853 when pioneers settled near the water to utilize its natural resources. In the late 1800s, Lake Minnetonka became increasingly popular with tourists as the railroad expanded.

Living on the lake gives residents an endless amount of water activities to enjoy, but that’s not all! Wayzata is home to Wayzata Chilly Open, which is the largest and perhaps most unique golf tournament held on a frozen lake. This yearly event draws thousands of Minnesotans to Lake Minnetonka. James J. Hill Days is an annual event that brings the community together for a parade, a carnival, a street market, concerts, logrolling, and more. 
 
To connect with nature, head over to Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail. This trail stretches over 15 miles and offers scenic views of the water. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider packing a tent and camping under the stars at Carver Park Reserve. Big Island Nature Park is another local gem that is part of the history of this lake.
